Mbaitu inc. seed and food security drive is one of the programs of the Organization that focuses on ensuring that the households in the South Eastern Kenya region are able to be food secure. The program started as a result of food insecurity caused by COVID 19.
COVID 19 greatly impacted food security in Kenya. The potential impact of Covid-19 on the counties of South Eastern Kenya and the marginalized in rural Kenya has continued to be severe. This calls for the need of Mbaitu inc. and other similar organizations to be part of the solution towards the food insecurity caused by COVID 19 and revamping economic activities that were heavily impacted by the pandemic in the region.
Through our 500 members, friends of the community and sponsors Mbaitu inc. fundraised to respond to the impacts of COVID 19 to food security in the three counties that we serve. This was achieved through the COVID 19 Relief and seed Fund. The program ensures food security in the South Eastern part of Kenya by providing seeds and food to farmers while they awaitfor their harvest. This is achieved through donations given by Mbaitu Inc. Members and event sponsors.
The idea is to identify successful home-grown self-help programs in rural Kenya that can be strengthened through financial and technical support. It also entails cutting of overhead costs and effective distribution of the seed and food by engaging the local communities, churches, women groups in achieving this goal.
Step 1 | Members suggest viable villages, a host church or host community group in the three counties (Makueni, Kitui, & Machakos). |
Step 2 | Food drive committee reaches out to the host churches. |
Step 3 | Identifying needy families that will benefit from the food/seed and Share list of identified families with the committee for planning and approval |
Step 4 | Connecting with shopkeepers/ seeds stores for current pricing. |
Step 5 | Food drive fundraiser- All members and friends of our counties are encouraged to give. |
Step 6 | Food and seed distribution |
Step 7 | Follow up report |
Mbaitu inc. with the support of the foundations and in partnership with existing organisations wishes to grow this to a sustainable program through:
Mbaitu will empower farmers to be self-reliant, this will ensure they have extra resources to sustain their livelihoods.
Mbaitu will invest in trainings that will ensure the farmers use the best seeds that will enable farmers to have a harvest even during dry spells for which this region is prone to.
In future Mbaitu will play a major role in providing market linkages that will enable the farmers to sell their products across the regions.
Mbaitu plans to mobilize the farmers to form table banking units that will act as a source of funds to members for either startups or expansion of their farming activities.
Mbaitu will also ensure increased collaboration with agricultural experts to ensure the farmers are advised on the best seeds to use to get quality products.
Mbaiutu will strive to ensure that the members have access to continuous water supply as this is one of the challenges that the farmers face in the region.
