The Mbaitu inc. Scholarship and Education Fund is a program that seeks to impact children and youth to realize their full potential. Mbaitu scholarship fund provides comprehensive secondary school scholarships to academically promising, yet financially disadvantaged youth from the South Eastern Kenya Counties, namely Machakos, Kitui and Makueni. Since inception in 2020 the fund has enabled the youth from the selected counties to join secondary school. The scholarship covers school fees, transport, books, pocket money, mentoring, psychosocial support, and leadership development. Mbaitu recently partnered with the Higher Education Loan Board to ensure that the Mbaitu inc. sponsored students can access college education by receiving loans which they can repay after they start working. This is because Mbaitu inc. realizes that education is only useful if one specializes in a career. HELB has also further funded the scholarship drive in the past. Other sponsors and partners include Certified homes, BAMA diaspora, Optiven, L.I.F.E, African touch Adventure to mention but a few.
Kenya has signed the international convention on the rights of the child and has proceeded to domesticate the said convention by enacting the Children’s Act. Under the said Convention, it is duty of the government to enable all children obtain basic education and Kenya has done this provision of free and compulsory primary education. Under Kenya Laws, basic education is offered tuition free for the first 8 years and subsequently highly subsided at secondary school level. It is therefore the case to find a lot of very bright but needy children who have spent 8 years of basic education unable to proceed to secondary school for want of school fees and other necessities. Mbaitu inc, through the scholarship fund hopes to bridge this gap and facilitate through scholarship bright but needy children from the three counties to access public secondary school. Mbaitu inc believes that education is a social equalizer and if children from poor families are facilitated to access secondary school education, then they are better placed to later join the job market and lift themselves and their families from poverty.
